As per tradition, we have 3 main types of costume. Anyone marching in our procession should be in costume. We’re proud of our costumes having won ‘Best Dressed Society’ more than once. It’s a way for spectators to recognise us, and its just fun to dress up sometimes!
- First Pioneer – Saxon
- Second Pioneer – Dickensian (or Victorian) Ladies & Gentlemen
- Smuggler- Black and Red striped jumper (not rugby shirt) with white trousers. Accompany with a red neckerchief.
There’s no rules for how you dress up as a First or Second Pioneer, just as long as your costume is distinguishable, authentic(ish) and with lots of bling – the more sequins and shiny stuff the better. If possible, try to aim for a black and red theme. You do, however, need to consider the fire safety of whatever you are wearing including accessories. If you intend to carry a lit torch, we advise you do not wear highly flammable materials and spray the whole costume with flame retardant spray.
We would encourage wearing comfortable, sturdy footwear such as walking boots. The procession route is quite long and there can discarded torches along the way. In addition, the bonfire site can be muddy.
You can march in other costumes, but this is only if you really struggle to sort a first or second pioneer costume. Ideally still stick with the red and black theme.
Smuggler jumpers
Bonfire Societies are infamous for their smuggler (striped) jumpers. Our jumpers need to be black and red, with a black neckband, waistband and cuffs. If you march in a smuggler jumper, you may be asked to help out with some of the work during the procession.
You can download a suggested knitting pattern for our smuggler’s jumper.
Purchasing new costumes
We may be able to sell you a smuggler jumper, depending on the time of year. We may also be able to help with offering other costumes or accessories second-hand. Some of our members are also very handy with a sewing machine and/or knitting needles and may be able to help. To make enquiries about your costume, please contact our Membership Secretary.
